How Cyclists Should Approach Indoor Cycling Classes

The target audience is cyclists and triathletes, but the information in this article applies to everyone who takes indoor cycling classes, even those who never ride outside. Bringing your cycling training indoors (Part 2)


I have good news and I have bad news regarding indoor cycling classes.

Let’s start with the bad news because I want to end on a positive note.


As a longtime Master Instructor in the Indoor Cycling Industry for the past 15 years (meaning I’ve certified and educated a large number of instructors at conferences and workshops) I have found that the really good instructors who are well versed in exercise science and practice effective, cycling-specific training techniques are unfortunately in the minority. The fitness world has morphed the original intention of indoor cycling and Spinning® into aerobics classes on bikes, and has resorted to gimmicks and non-stop movements in their quest to keep students interested. But don’t despair – there are good instructors out there who are more like coaches.


Let’s examine the reason for this.


There is a schism between the “fitness” and “cycling” worlds that doesn’t need to exist. Many instructors who cater just to the “fitness” community claim that they don’t need to practice cycling-specific techniques because their students aren’t cyclists, and aren’t interested in performance improvement, but are interested instead in weight loss and having fun. Hence, they bring into the cycling studio techniques and movements they use in other group exercise classes. Cyclists look at those crazy moves done in a typical “Spinning” class, shake their heads and vow never to step foot in there.


A “cycling-specific” class taught by a cyclist is often looked upon by the fitness crowd as elitist and boring. It doesn’t have to be this way. Cycling-specific doesn’t have to mean staying seated for 30 minutes or more without changing position, and it is not necessary to do Zone 2 training in a 45-60-minute class – that is what leads some to believe that cycling training is boring. Cycling-specific simply means honoring the rules of biomechanics and proper cycling technique that have been found to be scientifically sound after decades of research on proper position, pedaling mechanics and optimal power output. There is no sport that has been studied as much as cycling – cycling boasts over 100 years of scientific study!


What is important to realize is that the same type of training that improves a cyclist’s performance would be far more beneficial to the non-cycling population as well. The rules of biomechanics do not change between a cyclist and a non-cyclist, and they do not become less true because one moves from an outdoor road bike to an indoor bike. While there are a few differences with an indoor bike, such as a fixed gear drive train with a heavy flywheel, and the fact that most of the bikes do not move in any way (flex or bend), for the most part, you would still ride both bicycles in the same way.


Training using proper cycling techniques indoors would create adaptations in the non-cyclist’s body that lead to greater fat burning and increased caloric consumption than they experience in their aerobics-on-a-bike classes. These non-outdoor-cycling indoor cyclists would find they have greater strength and endurance, better fitness, and would ultimately increase their weight loss if they stopped the madness and just rode the bike like a real bike. How would we know? It all comes down to power output. Anything that would reduce a rider’s power output (as all these crazy moves tend to do) reduces the effectiveness of the workout. Additionally, the additional fluff of aerobics-type moves does absolutely nothing to increase fitness, and in fact, may even lead to a decrease their fitness potential. Many of these popular moves are not only less effective, but they are also quite dangerous.


The following is a list of popular movements or techniques that should be avoided at all costs in any indoor cycling class, whether the rider is a cyclist or not. If your instructor does any of these, simply smile and ride your bike like you’re supposed to ride a bike. On the other hand, if the instructor insists the class do any of these, then run, don’t walk, towards the nearest door.

Lifting weights or using bands while riding. These two training modalities should not be combined. Since you cannot lift the amount of weight that would increase your muscle fiber strength, it is a total waste of time from the weight lifting standpoint and it detracts substantially from your ability to pedal properly. Therefore, neither modality does you any good, and the effectiveness of each are negated. Go to the weight room after class if you want stronger pecs or delts. Unfortunately, adding weight workouts to pedaling has become all the rage lately, as studios try to combine upper body workouts with cardio. Just don’t do it!
Pushups. If you are sitting at a desk reading this, put your hands on the desk or table in front of you and do a couple of so-called pushups. Need I say more? They do nothing for you pecs and everything to inhibit your pedaling and proper breathing. You can include any kind of upper-body contrived movement in this category, such as twisting or turning or bobbing and weaving.
Crunches. Similar to pushups, they are not effective when sitting upright. The instructor does not know his exercise physiology if he’s teaching these. Cyclists do need to work their core, but do so in a pilates or fitball class and not on the bike.
Hovers. Very, very popular. Instructors claim hovers mimic mountain biking and that they work the glutes and hamstrings. In reality, all they do is put your knees, hips and back at risk, because the butt is pushed way back over the saddle, hyperextending the low back, while you are pedaling at 70/80/90 times a minute. Biomechanically the knee joint is at an unsound angle to apply effective force to the pedal. Besides, on a mountain bike, when you push the hips back and lower the shoulders, it is because you are going downhill steeply and you don’t want fly over the bars. You are also maneuvering the bike underneath you, and you are not pedaling while you do it.
Isolations. Instructors like to turn indoor cycling classes into a core workout by having you hold completely still and suck in the abs. They might ask for you to “isolate” the hips while pedaling. The quads and glutes will soon start burning, but do not interpret that as an effective burn, there is nothing functional about this movement – the burn is from mechanical inefficiency. You won’t become more fit by doing this, and your core will not become stronger, but you will look silly and like all the rest, your ability to maintain a consistent pedal stroke is inhibited.
Squats, or lowering the hips. Potentially one of the most dangerous of the popular moves. One can only imagine the increased forces in the knee joint as the hips are lowered, and as the pedal drives the tibia upwards into the femur at an odd angle eighty or ninety times a minute. Think improper squats in the weight room driving the knees forward of the toes – at super high speeds. Proponents love to praise the burn in the quads, but similar to isolations, that burn is due to mechanical inefficiency, not any kind of functional strength building in the muscle. Get thee out of there fast if your instructor does these.
Excessive high cadence with no resistance. Part of the power equation is to have a force against which to push. If there is no (or too low) resistance, then power drops, even if cadence is high. When power is reduced, work is decreased, and so is fitness potential and calories burned. Instead of pedaling like a hamster on crack, bobbing in the saddle at 120+rpm, it’s far better to turn up the resistance and lower the cadence – preferably below 100rpm. Do this and your power will increase – a goal of all cyclists, indoors and outdoors. (I will cover excessive cadence indoors in more detail in a future article).


The good news

What is a cyclist to do? Well, the good news is that there are many excellent and motivating instructors out there who do ride a real bike and bring their outdoor experiences indoors. You may have to do some searching and try different instructors. If you can’t find the perfect cyclist-coach combination but you find someone you enjoy who motivates you, the rest is up to you. Remember, indoor cycling is all about taking responsibility for your own training. No one else is forcing you to do anything you don’t want to do.


When you first start looking for a class, ask the fitness director which instructors are outdoor cyclists, and let them know you are looking for classes that refrain from aerobics-on-a-bike techniques (known in the industry as “contraindications” in indoor cycling). Inquire whether they require all their instructors to maintain their certifications. While this is not a guarantee of quality, it is at least a first step.


Try out several classes. You may find an instructor who provides a fun and effective workout, but perhaps the intensity is too high all the time or she changes positions a little too often for your tastes or current training needs. Just sit in the saddle, ride your own ride and decide not do those movements.


The following are the potential benefits that can be achieved through proper training indoors in cycling classes. You simply have to train these elements of your cycling fitness the same way you would train them outdoors or on your trainer: intelligently, with the right gear (resistance) and realistic cadences. In general, cadence ranges of 55-85 would indicate a hill, and 75-110rpm would indicate a flat road. (Note that the cadence suggestions and durations below are approximate ranges for the general population – there are always exceptions based on ability).
Aerobic endurance: best enhanced with sessions longer than one hour
Tempo workouts: Moderate 90-100rpm in Zone 3 – the zen of indoor cycling!
Muscular endurance: climbs focusing on repeatedly contracting against a resistance gradually maintaining the climb for longer and longer periods, 65-85rpm
Force development: higher resistance climbs of 55-65 rpm (50rpm advisable only for cyclists who have already established excellent strength)
Lactate threshold improvement: probably one of the best ways to utilize your indoor cycling classes is to train your lactate threshold through longer Zone 4 intervals. Sparingly that is.
Anaerobic endurance: high intensity interval training of 1-3 minutes
Aerobic capacity/VO2 Max: “sufferfest” anaerobic Zone 5 intervals of 3-8 minutes
Anaerobic capacity: Very high intensity Zone 5 intervals of about 15-60 seconds.
Neuromuscular/leg speed: while the neuromuscular adaptations are limited due to the fact that most bikes have a heavy flywheel pulling the pedals around, you can still train your leg speed if you make sure to stay ahead of the flywheel and to have sufficient resistance. Cap your leg speed drills indoors on a bike with a flywheel at 110rpm, perhaps up to 120rpm for skilled cyclists. Work on spin-ups and accelerations against a resistance.
Explosive power (sprinting): Be very careful with these. Most instructors and students do not know a true sprint. Duration is less than 30 seconds and resistance is high. Do not do these except in the spring as you approach your cycling season.
Technique: classes are a fantastic place to work on pedal stroke drills, keeping the knees in, and upper body relaxation while riding.
Mind-body focus: visualize your favorite rides outside. Establish your mental strength and tenacity indoors, so you can transfer it to your rides outdoors. Indoors is a wonderful venue to work on your mind-body focus, and is facilitated with the right (usually instrumental) music that can transform you to another place.
Recovery rides: an indoor cycling class is a great place to spin your legs easily the day after a hard workout. Keep the intensity low.


A word about hand positions

Some indoor cycling programs will dictate where and when you should put your hands on the handlebars. Ignore these requirements for the most part and put your hands where you are most comfortable, changing them often and keeping in mind the reasons you put them where you do on your bike outside. For example, when you stand up, you most likely move them to the outsides of the bars for stability and leverage. Do the same indoors – it’s uncomfortable and ineffective to keep them on the tops of the bars in a standing position. Refrain from holding the hands in the center of the bars at any time, or holding them in any type of prayer position.


There is a lot of real estate on the bars on indoor bicycles, for the simple reason that the bikes are designed for riders of many different sizes. When seated, if you are tall with long arms, you may be able to comfortably slide your hands forward on the bars, almost to the bar ends. On the other hand, if you have short arms or a short trunk, then you wouldn’t want to slide your hands near the bar ends while seated – it would be like riding a bike that is two sizes too big for you and would cause stress in the neck and shoulders. Instead, put your hand on the handlebars so that you maintain a 90-degree angle between at the shoulder joint. Stretching forward greatly increases that angle. When standing with a lot of resistance (climbing) move the hands to the bar ends as if on the hoods of your own brake levers.


The aero position is not recommended for anyone on any type of indoor cycling bicycle, triathlete or not, and regardless of whether the instructor says to do so or not. These bikes are not your expensive, perfectly-fit road bikes. They are also not the same geometry of a triathlon or time trial bike, so an aero position will potentially do more damage than good. If you are a triathlete and need to practice the aero position, do it on your trainer at home.


A word about intensity

Indoor cycling classes often tend to be pedal-to-the-metal in every class, every week of the year. I recommend working all aspects of your cycling fitness, including the range of intensity parameters that are outlined in the list above. Periodize your program, starting with easier workouts in the early winter and then gradually increasing intensity throughout the winter months. Alternate harder days with easier days, and higher cadence lower gear workouts with higher resistance climbing workouts. When it’s time to go hard, classes are a fantastic place to give it your all, perhaps even more so than alone on your trainer. But if your own training program calls for an easier workout than the instructor has planned, stick to your own plan and try not to get caught up in the energy of the class and go harder than you are supposed to. Wearing a heart rate monitor can help you stay honest with your planned workout.


In summary, when deciding whether to do a movement in an indoor cycling class, ask yourself if it would inhibit power output and performance outdoors, or your ability to ride your bike properly. If so, then it will do the same indoors and you should not do it. If it would likely injure or cause discomfort in a cyclist on a road bike, then it will likely injure or cause discomfort indoors too. It’s that simple. Embrace the wonderful benefits of indoor cycling classes and remember to Keep it Real.

Expert tips to check your form, blast more fat, and stay injury-free

Arrive (But Don't Leave) Early

Arrive 10 minutes before class begins, especially if it's your first time. It takes a few minutes to properly fit your bike (more on that later), and a bad set up is both incredibly uncomfortable and ups your injury risk, says Alex Figueroa, a certified cycling instructor, personal trainer, and triathlon coach in the Boston area. The extra prep time gives you the chance to ask your instructor for help if you need it and still be ready for the full warm-up, which is just as important as any other part of the ride, Figueroa says.
And don’t be tempted to slip out during the cool-down—stay for the entire class! In fact, stick around for a few minutes after the class to alleviate and prevent any pain often caused by holding a forward bend (like you do for the entire ride). Try this move from Dr. Yoav Surprun, DPT, a McKenzie physical therapist at Sobe Spine in Miami Beach: Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart. Create as large of a hollow, or sway, in the small of your back as possible by tilting your pelvis (as if pushing the belly button forward), hold the tilt for 2 or 3 seconds, and then relax. Do this 15 to 20 times.

Saddle Up

Even if you've been cycling for years, things like padded shorts, new cycling shoes, or even certain muscle groups becoming more flexible can alter bike fit, says Caroline Dawson, a master instructor for Spinning® in New York City. For optimal performance, stand to the left of the bike and adjust the saddle and handlebars to hip height. Next, bend your right arm 90 degrees, form a fist, and place it at the center of the handlebars, (the part closest to the seat); move the seat forward or back until it touches your elbow.

Finally, check your work: Sitting in the saddle with your leg extended downward, your knee should have only a slight bend (about a 25- to 35-degree angle). “You want a fairly extended leg so you are not pedaling all squished up for more power and so the knees are happier,” Dawson says. When both pedals are parallel to the ground, your front knee should be directly above the center of the pedal. If it's not, you need to slide your seat forward or back until your body is in proper alignment.

Check Your Alignment

Throughout your ride, check for any excess pressure on your wrists or in your hands and if necessary, shift your weight back to where it belongs in your legs, says certified cycling instructor Paul Katami. Qualities of a good cycling posture include: hinging forward at the hips slightly, little pressure on the back, knees, and wrists, and minimal rounding of your back and shoulders.

During standing positions, make sure your hips are above your pedal stroke, Katami says. If you find yourself leaning into the handlebars (especially when pedaling out of the saddle), sit back into the saddle for a few seconds to recharge and realign your body.

Stop Competing With Your Neighbor

The group energy and dynamic of a cycling class can make it feel like a competitive sport, but its important to remember that it's not the Tour de France and you shouldn't feel pressured to outperform your classmates. Make the ride your own by setting reasonable expectations and sticking with them, Dawson says. “Make today's ride about your fitness level and body's needs for today. Balancing your performance on the bike will help you adhere to a cycling program for longer and get you more results."

Get In Gear

Sneakers and capris are fine for your first few classes, but if you want to make cycling part of your regular routine (say, at least once a week), you may want to invest in cycling shoes and padded shorts, Figueroa says.

Basic shorts range in price from $20 to $100 depending on the brand, but any pair that fits you well will help reduce discomfort. Cycling shoes clip into the pedals to prevent slipping and give you more power. They also have a solid bottom that doesn't flex, which is what you want when your feet are constantly pushing into pedals for 45 minutes to an hour, Figueroa says. High-tech designs and weather-proofing can drive prices up, but you don't need those fancy features if you're only taking a few indoor cycling classes a week. Look for a basic shoe that fits well—the sales staff can help fit you properly.

If you're still deciding if cycling is for you, wear a stiff-soled sneaker and place your feet where they're comfortable (avoid shoving your foot all the way into the end of the toe cage).

Don't Cheat Yourself

When the instructor tells you to add resistance, don’t just reach for the knob and fake it. You're not fooling anyone, but more importantly, riding without enough resistance can wear on your joints and cause injuries (and a lot of discomfort) if you're bouncing up and down in the saddle. “It's easy to see in a class when someone isn't able to create a smooth circular motion in their legs and they "bottom out," creating a sewing machine look versus and nice circular pedal stroke,” Katami says.

Figueroa agrees. “The bike will pull by the bone, but muscle pushes the bike,” he says. In order to push the bike properly, it needs to be in the proper gear, which happens by actively using your resistance knob. Remember that your primary focus shouldn’t be how fast you can spin your wheel, but your overall power output on the bike, Figueroa says. Power output is determined by your gear and your cadence (also known as revolutions per minute, RPM). “Focus on increasing your power output and maintaining it during the ride,” he says. 

Crank It Up

Using more resistance will not make your thighs bigger. Cycling is a cardiovascular activity, not a strength builder. "In order for an exercise to be considered a strength building activity, it requires working the muscles to complete fatigue," says Amy Dixon, a celebrity trainer and exercise physiologist. In other words, you would need to put enough resistance on the bike to completely fatigue your legs in 6-8 revolutions. The right amount of resistance can make the difference between a great workout and just spinning your wheels.

To avoid using your thigh muscles (quads) too much, focus on keeping your weight back in your hips and avoid pointing your toes as you pedal, Figueroa says. By pressing through with a flat foot, you'll help maximize engagement of your glutes and hips and reduce the pressure on your quads and knee joints. Think of pulling your toes upwards as you pedal so that they're slightly above the heel (if you haven’t done it before, it might feel like your feet are flexed).

Guide Your Ride With RPM

Tracking your cadence, RPM, can help you guide your ride and provide instant feedback on your performance. If your RPM is extremely low (especially during an intense climb), you probably won't last long and should consider lowering your resistance, Figueroa says. Conversely, if you're going faster than 120 RPM, there's not enough resistance for you to be pushing the bike—the bike is pushing you. Make sure you have enough resistance to maintain control.

Think back to the last time you rode a bike outdoors—it’s pretty tough to move super fast. By using the resistance to create your "terrain," your indoor ride more closely mimics a road riding experience where you'd hardly ever go above 100 RPM, Figueroa says.

If your bike doesn't have a cadence computer on the console, you can figure it out by counting your pedal strokes for six seconds and then multiplying by 10. Sixty to 80 RPM is a good general range for climbs, and for seated or standing runs, aim for 90 to 110 RPM, Figueroa says.

Stand Up Smarter

Standing positions during your ride should be as close to your perfect seated position as possible. “Don't stand and lean forward," Figueroa says. "As soon as you come forward, all the work goes into your knee joint, which doesn’t allow the power of your muscles in the hip joint to take over." When you stand, you should still feel the nose of the saddle bumping against the back of the inner thighs, he explains.

The two standing positions you'll use:
Standing run: Many riders mistakenly focus on speed in this position and end up bouncing up and down, Figueroa says. “Hold your body steady and focus on equally pushing down and pulling up, working through a solid core."

Standing climb: Since this position requires much heavier resistance, your body weight needs to change, Figueroa says. “In outdoor cycling, you would actually tilt the handlebars to the side, so in this case, shift your body weight over each individual down stroke of the pedal… The further back your weight is, the more you’ll use the muscles in your hips—every pedal stroke is a single-leg squat."

THE BENEFITS OF INDOOR CYCLING & CALORIES BURNED

Indoor cycling is a popular exercise performed on a stationary bike usually in a class format led to music by a certified instructor. The program takes the class through a simulated tour of hills and flat roads. During the class, you set your own pace, meaning your workout is as easy or as hard as you make it. There are several benefits to a the workout, including calorie burning.
IMPROVING CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH
Physical inactivity can have a huge impact on your cardiovascular health, leading to cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association recommends that all healthy adults, age 18-65, get at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise five days a week. Cycling of any kind is one of the activities the AHA suggests for improving your cardiovascular health.

GENTLE ON THE BACK
According to Spine-Health, indoor cycling is a type of low-impact aerobic exercise that is not only considered highly effective when done regularly, but also is gentle on the back. This is because many people prefer to stay seated, which takes the weight off of their bodies. In addition, this type of exercise, when performed for 30 to 40 minutes, increases production of endorphins, the body's natural pain killer, which may help eliminate a person's need for medication if he has chronic back pain.

CALORIE BURN AND CONSISTENCY
A 150-pound person who participates in an indoor cycling class for 45 minutes will burn more than 360 calories, according to Fitness magazine. This makes indoor cycling a popular choice for people who want a low-impact activity with a high-calorie burn. In addition, because indoor cycling requires only one type of motion, there are no choreographed routines to remember as in other types of aerobics classes.

GOOD FOR WALKERS
Indoor cycling provides benefits for individuals who also like to walk for exercise, according to Weight Watchers. It will improve your coordination, which will aid in the prevention of injury when you walk; build lower body strength, which will help prevent your legs from becoming too tired too early during your walks; and help strengthen your core, leading to better posture when you walk.

BUILD LEG STRENGTH
The program is also an effective exercise for building and toning lower body strength, particularly in the calves, buttocks and quadriceps, and the muscle tendons, according to Alive. It's especially beneficial if you want a cardiovascular workout that will improve your legs without any type of weight bearing exercise.

The right shoe can make a world of difference to your indoor cycling workout, especially if it’s a regular part of your weekly routine. The bikes of most indoor cycling studios have two-sided pedals: one side has a toe cage with straps, and the other is either a plain platform or an SPD-compatible “clipless” pedal system. SPD, or Shimano Pedal Design, is a versatile clipless pedal system that fits cycling shoes with SPD cleats.

Types of Shoes

If you’re new to indoor group cycling, you can wear a regular pair of gym shoes to class and secure your feet to the pedals by tightening the straps on the toe cages. By attaching your feet to the pedals, you increase the power in each stroke. Some enthusiasts have used gym shoes in class for years without issue. However, a considerable number of dedicated cyclists choose to upgrade to cycling shoes. Types of cycling shoes commonly available at bike shops include road shoes, mountain biking shoes, touring shoes and indoor cycling shoes.

Benefits of Cycling Shoes

For indoor cycling class, cycling shoes trump gym shoes because of their stiff soles and firm attachment to the pedals. The cleats attach to the shoe directly under the ball of your foot, so that the ball is your foot’s connection point to the pedal. The cleat and pedal system stabilizes your foot, holding it firmly in place, which means less energy is wasted between your foot and the pedal. The stiffness of the sole has a similar benefit because it prevents you from wasting energy by bending your foot as you pedal. The stability and stiffness of cycling shoes help prevent foot fatigue.

Cycling Shoe Features

Indoor cycling shoes are a hybrid of touring and road shoes. Their stiff soles are made of either injection-molded plastic, carbon fiber or fiberglass. Unlike slick-bottomed road shoes, however, indoor cycling shoes have cleats that are recessed into a treaded rubber overlay, making them easy to walk in and less dangerous on floors that routinely get sweaty. The upper portion of indoor-specific shoes are made of lighter and more breathable materials, which is advantageous in a hot studio.

Considerations

Find out what types of pedals the bikes at your health club use before you buy shoes. Health clubs that have large populations of road cyclists or triathletes may have a few bikes in their studios with different clipless systems, such as the Look system. Fit is important. The shoe should be snug, but comfortable. The ball of your foot should be centered at the widest part of the shoe for optimal cleat placement. With regular use, shoes tend to last for about a year before their soles lose their stiffness and need to be replaced.

TRAINING IN HEART RATE ZONES TO BURN FUEL MORE EFFICIENTLY

ZONE  1- Typically your warm up or recovery zone.  Burning mostly fat, secondary sugar. Should feel comfortable and easy.

ZONE 2- A zone to develop your aerobic capacity. Burning mostly fat, secondary sugar. You are teaching the body to burn fat here. You can talk to your neighbor but your body has an urge to go faster.

ZONE 3- This is a zone to be in to burn the most fat and sugar. This is where you are building your aerobic endurance. You feel heat in the muscles, its tough, but you can work through it. You notice your breathing has sped up possibly and you’re teaching your body to go longer and stronger.

Anaerobic Threshold- This is the line where your body shifts from burning fat to burning more sugar. Your breathing is more labored, your mouth may open and you may only be able to speak a few words to your neighbor. This is the line on our fitness level that we want to push up to be able to stay in zone 3 longer and be able to burn fat longer.

ZONE 4- Heavy breathing, very difficult. We have reached the other side of that Anaerobic Threshold line and we are pulling it up at this point to be able to increase our time spent in Zone 3. We are mostly burning sugar here, and can only stay in this zone for short bursts before looking for a way out. Great for training for races. 

Heart rate monitors are great to wear especially during a CYCLE class, due to its constant movement. When you reach your anaerobic threshold you can see what your heart rate is. When you pass AT and reach a point where you can only sustain for no more than 60 seconds and as little as 20 seconds you will realize your maximum heart rate and can work from there.
Resistance training/weight training is great for developing efficiency in higher caloric burn. 1# of muscle burns 30-50 calories whereas 1# of fat burns approx 3 calories.

The Advantages of Wearing Cycling Shorts

Cycling shorts are sleek and sporty, and the people who wear them appear obviously devoted to their sport. However, the garments aren't about looks. Cycling shorts are vital pieces of equipment that give the rider several advantages over regular street clothes. They're a necessity any time you want to hop on a bike and hit the road.

Construction

Cycling shorts are designed to fit and support your body when you're in a cycling position. For this reason, they are made from eight to 12 vertical panels, providing extra curvature. Their flat seams don't press into your skin when you ride, unlike regular shorts' seams. Cycling shorts have grippers at the bottom of each leg to keep them from riding upward. Men's cycling shorts typically have a shorter rise and a wider waistband. Women's cycling shorts typically have a longer rise and a smaller waist. Don't worry about wearing gender-specific shorts, however. Go for the shorts that fit best.

Fabric

Because cycling shorts should fit your riding shape, they are made of stretchy fabrics. Stretchy fabrics have a compression effect that supports your muscles and stimulates blood flow. Another big advantage is that the fabrics have high-tech fibers that wick away moisture and allow your skin to breathe. Look for shorts made of nylon spandex with a polyester yarn woven throughout.

Chamois

Cycling shorts come with a padded liner called a chamois, which protects your groin area from chafing and friction and helps to cushion your ride. This is vital because sitting on a bike saddle puts pressure on your perineum, the junction of major nerves and arteries in the area between your buttocks and genitals. A padded chamois also protects against bacteria build-up. Look for a chamois made of open cell foam. A chamois can come in varying shapes and sizes. Choose the one that fits your body best.

Styles

While the most frequently seen style of bike shorts is the traditional slim cut, the industry now has several styles. This is an advantage because the shorts look like street clothes but they have the vital protection and function of cycling shorts concealed inside. Styles include baggies, which look like hiking shorts but have cycling shorts inside, and skorts for women, with a skirt hiding the cycling shorts underneath. Some cyclists opt for bib shorts, which look like traditional cycling shorts with suspenders attached.

Insider's Tip

Cycling shorts are designed to make your ride more comfortable and to protect you from irritation and chafing. Because the shorts have bacteria-fighting crotch liners and flat seams, you are supposed to wear the shorts without underwear. Underwear will add seams that can cause skin irritation and fabric that will keep you wet. Forego the skivvies and wear the cycling shorts, which should fit like a glove.
